Tiger's Eye
Origin
Tiger's eye is formed through the transformation (metamorphism) of the mineral crocidolite, a type of blue asbestos. Over millions of years, the fibrous crocidolite is gradually replaced by quartz. The original fibrous structure is preserved, so that the characteristic "cat's eye effect" (chatoyance) becomes visible when polished. This effect is reminiscent of the glint of a tiger's eye in sunlight and gives the stone its unmistakable radiance.
Composition
Tiger's eye is a member of the quartz family and consists mainly of silicon dioxide. The golden-brown to honey-colored stripes are caused by iron oxides that are incorporated during the crystallization process. The combination of fibrous structure and iron impurities gives tiger's eye its metallic-silky sheen.
History
Even in antiquity, tiger's eye was highly valued as a protective and amulet stone. In Egypt, it was believed to harness the power of the sun and bestow strength and courage. Roman soldiers wore tiger's eye amulets in battle, seeing it as a talisman that granted courage and steadfastness. In many cultures, tiger's eye was considered a "guardian stone" that wards off negative influences and protects the wearer. To this day, it is a popular gemstone and healing stone, whose fascinating play of colors captivates collectors and those interested in spirituality alike.
