Selenite
Origin
Selenite is a particularly clear and fine variety of the mineral gypsum. It is formed by the evaporation of mineral-rich water in sedimentary basins or salt lakes. When the water evaporates slowly, the dissolved minerals crystallize and form translucent crystals over long periods of time. Particularly impressive specimens of selenite grow in caves or large geological cavities, where they can grow into enormous crystals over millions of years under uniform conditions – such as in the famous "Cueva de los Cristales" in Mexico, where gigantic selenite crystals up to 11 meters long have been discovered.
Composition
Selenite belongs to the gypsum group and consists mainly of calcium sulfate with water of crystallization. Its special characteristic is its glassy clarity and its soft, almost silky reflection of light. Due to its fine structure, it can be easily cleaved, giving it its characteristic, shimmering luster.
History
The name Selenite is derived from the Greek "selene" (moon) and refers to its silvery-white shimmer, reminiscent of moonlight. Even in antiquity, it was revered as a "moonstone" and associated with the moon goddess. In the Middle Ages, selenite was often used in window openings, as its translucent plates cast a soft light in churches and chapels. In spiritual traditions, it was also considered a stone of purity and light, believed to facilitate access to higher levels of consciousness.
Meaning & Effect (as handed down)
Selenite is described in many traditions as a stone of clarity, calm, and spiritual connection. It is said to calm the mind, strengthen intuition, and open access to inner knowledge. It is especially believed to help release disturbing thoughts and find inner peace during meditation. In esoteric applications, it is often used to fill rooms with harmonious energy or to promote protection and cleansing. Traditionally, it is also considered a companion that dissolves inner blockages and bestows mental clarity.
