Garnet
Origin
Garnets form in metamorphic and igneous rocks, i.e., where heat and pressure reshape minerals deep within the Earth. Over millions of years, they crystallize in the form of small, often rounded crystals, which stand out due to their hardness and color intensity. The best-known color is deep red, but garnets can also occur in green, yellow, orange, brown, or even almost colorless – depending on the trace elements that are incorporated during growth.
Composition
Garnet is not a single mineral species, but a whole group of minerals, all belonging to the silicate family. They share a characteristic crystal form (mostly dodecahedral) and high hardness. The variety of colors is due to trace elements such as iron, manganese, chromium, or aluminum. The best-known is the red almandine garnet, traditionally used as a gemstone.
History
The name "garnet" is derived from the Latin "granum" (= grain, seed), as the red crystals are reminiscent of the seeds of the pomegranate. It was already worn as jewelry and an amulet in antiquity. Romans used it for engravings and signet rings; in the Middle Ages, it was considered a protective stone for knights and travelers. In the Victorian era, garnet jewelry was particularly popular and was set in elaborate necklaces and rings. To this day, it is considered a classic gemstone with timeless elegance.
