Lapis lazuli
Origin
Lapis lazuli is not a single mineral, but a deep blue rock composed of several minerals – mainly lazurite, as well as calcite, pyrite, and sodalite. It is formed by the metamorphosis of calcareous rocks, which are transformed under heat and pressure in the earth's crust. Over millions of years, this develops the characteristic deep blue rock masses, interspersed with gold-shimmering pyrite veins and white calcite inclusions.
Composition
The main component, lazurite, gives lapis lazuli its royal blue color. Pyrite provides golden speckles, while calcite forms white veins. This combination makes each piece of lapis lazuli unique. Even in ancient times, the stone was highly valued for its special color, which is extremely rare in nature.
History
Lapis lazuli is one of the oldest and most significant gemstones and cult stones of humankind. It was mined in Afghanistan over 7,000 years ago, and remains one of the most important sources to this day. In ancient Egypt, lapis lazuli was considered a symbol of heaven and the divine – it was incorporated into amulets, scarabs, and grave goods. It was also highly sought after in the Middle Ages: the pigment "ultramarine" was obtained from lapis lazuli, the most precious blue in painting, used to color Madonna paintings, among other things. In many cultures, the stone was associated with wisdom, power, and spirituality.
