Smoky quartz

Origin
Smoky quartz, like rock crystal, forms in cavities in granite and pegmatite, but differs due to the natural radiation processes that color it. Over a long period of time, the radioactivity in the environment affects the clear quartz material, resulting in the characteristic smoky brown to dark gray coloration. The longer and stronger this radiation affects the quartz, the more intense the color of the crystal becomes.

Composition
Smoky quartz belongs to the quartz group and consists mainly of silicon dioxide. The typical smoky color is caused by small inclusions of aluminum and natural radiation influences during crystallization. Despite the darker color, the crystal remains chemically identical to clear rock crystal and exhibits the same typical crystal structures.

History
Smoky quartz was already sought after as a gemstone and amulet in antiquity. In Celtic and Scottish traditions, it was considered a protective stone that was supposed to protect the wearer from negative energies and evil spirits. In medieval alchemy, smoky quartz was also used to promote mental clarity and support meditation. To this day, collectors and those interested in spirituality appreciate the deep colors and powerful aura of this stone.
