Periclase
Origin
Pericline is a rare mineral that forms in metamorphic rocks such as gneiss and mica schist. In the Hohe Tauern mountains in Austria, it forms over millions of years under high pressure and moderate to high temperatures, typically together with other aluminum silicates such as andalusite and kyanite. The crystals often develop in prismatic or tabular form and are usually transparent to translucent.
Composition
Pericline belongs to the group of aluminum silicates and consists mainly of aluminum, silicon, and oxygen. Occasionally, traces of iron, magnesium, or sodium may be present, influencing the color nuances from colorless to light gray or slightly greenish. The crystals exhibit a glassy luster and are relatively hard, making them interesting for collectors.
History
In Europe, periclase is best known from the Hohe Tauern mountains, where it has been studied mineralogically since the 19th century. Due to its rarity and beautiful crystal form, it is mainly valued by collectors. In historical mineralogy, periclase was considered valuable for scientific studies on aluminum silicates and their formation conditions in the Alps.
Meaning & Effect (as handed down)
Traditionally, periclase is considered a stone of clarity, concentration, and grounding. It is said to calm the mind, promote inner balance, and strengthen perseverance. Many traditions see it as a supportive companion in decision-making and mental processes, especially when calm and balance are needed.
