Schörl

Origin
Schorl is the black variety of tourmaline rock and forms in metamorphic and pegmatitic rocks. It forms over millions of years when iron- and magnesium-rich minerals crystallize in hot, fluid-rich rock chambers. Schorl usually grows as elongated, prismatic crystals, often in bundles or as partly massive crystal aggregates.

Composition
Schorl belongs to the tourmaline family and consists mainly of complex aluminum silicates with iron, sodium, and boron. The dark, almost black color is due to the high iron content, which gives the crystal its characteristic, deep black appearance. Despite its dark appearance, schorl can have a glassy sheen, especially on polished surfaces.

History
Schorl was already valued in antiquity, although mostly under the general name "black tourmaline". In Europe, it was considered a protective stone against evil spirits and negative energies in the Middle Ages. Schorl was also used to make jewelry and amulets, especially in regions such as Germany, Italy and Russia, where tourmaline deposits were known. Today, schorl is valued not only as a gemstone, but also as a collector's item because of its deep black, shiny crystals.
