Jasper
Origin
Jaspis forms in sedimentary or volcanic rocks when quartz mixes with various minerals and organic inclusions. Over millions of years, these components crystallize into a dense, fine-grained stone. Depending on the composition of trace elements – such as iron, manganese, or clay minerals – jaspis displays an enormous variety of colors: from deep red to brown, yellow, green, and patterned variants. Its varied appearance is the result of long geological processes that make each jaspis unique.
Composition
Jaspis belongs to the large family of quartz and consists mainly of silicon dioxide. Its color and pattern are created by admixed minerals and iron oxides. Unlike rock crystal or amethyst, it is not transparent, but opaque and often polishable, which has made it a sought-after gemstone and ornamental stone for millennia.
History
Jasper is one of the oldest known gemstones and healing stones of humankind. It was already used in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece for amulets, seals, and jewelry. Biblical texts mention it as one of the gemstones of the High Priest, and in the Middle Ages it was considered a protective stone for warriors, believed to bestow courage and steadfastness. In Native American cultures, jasper was also revered as a sacred stone that strengthens the connection to the earth.
