Shungite

Origin
Shungite is an exceptional mineral that holds a unique position both geologically and historically. It originates almost exclusively from Karelia in northwestern Russia, where it formed approximately two billion years ago. Scientists assume that shungite originated from the remains of ancient microorganisms and plants that were deposited in sedimentary rocks and compacted under high pressure over immense periods of time into this special carbonaceous rock. This makes shungite one of the oldest known minerals of biological origin.

Composition
Unlike quartz or silicates, shungite consists mainly of carbon. It is particularly known for its content of fullerenes – spherical carbon molecules that were only scientifically discovered in the 1980s. Besides carbon, shungite also contains small amounts of silicates and other minerals, which give it its deep black color and characteristic metallic sheen.

History
Shungite owes its name to the Russian village of Shunga, near whose deposits it has been mined for centuries. Even the Tsars used the rock: in the 18th century, Tsar Peter the Great had healing and bathing houses equipped with shungite stones, convinced of their purifying effect. In the Karelia region, shungite was traditionally used for water – the stones were placed in wells and containers to keep the water clear and fresh. Today, shungite has a firm place both among collectors and in spiritual and esoteric applications.

Meaning & Effect (as handed down)
Shungite is traditionally considered a "stone of cleansing and protection". It is said to absorb negative energies and create a protective shield around its wearer. In traditions, shungite is associated with grounding, stability, and regeneration. Many people use it to harmonize spaces or to promote a feeling of balance and inner peace. It is also seen as a stone that can bring clarity during times of change and balance emotional stress.
